COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT HIGH SCHOOL BAND
“There isn’t room in my schedule.”
Each year, we lose talented young musicians who assume band won’t fit into their schedule — when in reality, it often can. Mill Creek offers flexible options such as online courses and summer classes that allow students to continue band while still taking advanced or specialized courses. We’ll share more about these options at Rising 9th Grade Parent Night.
“I don’t want to do marching band.”
Students do not have to participate in marching band to be enrolled in a band class. Many of our band students are also student-athletes or involved in other activities and successfully balance their schedules.
“I didn’t enjoy middle school band.”
This is one we hear often — and we get it. High school band is a very different experience. The pace is faster, the music is more engaging, and students are placed in ensembles based on skill level so they are both challenged and supported. Classes include students from multiple grade levels, which means built-in friendships and mentorship. Many students who were unsure at first end up loving it.
We recently asked our current high school band students why they decided to stay in band after middle school. Over 80% said they simply wanted to “give it one more year” — and they stayed because they loved it.
